In this piece I created a sculptural ceramic piece inspired from the sea. I chose to do a hammerhead shark because I have always loved how fierce they are yet they also seem so gentle. I'm from Puerto Rico and I wanted to make something that also reminded me of home- that I had a connection with.

I have a slight obsession with things that are both cute and unsettling at the same time, and that's exactly what I went for. This piece is meant to seem ordinary at first glance, but brings a shock factor the moment once you look closer - to notice the facial features and hands.

This piece represents the different aspects or ways of life. Even my shirt represents the rough paths in life that we experience. In my face I tried to represent how we hide sometimes how we feel, by blocking out some areas with white.

I really like the pop art type work. I wanted to try something with bright colors. The message behind my artwork is that everyone may look the same, but we all have something that makes us unique. I did that by making the balloon animals grey to represent us looking the same. I made the bright colors to represent our different backgrounds and our different things that make us unique.

The message that I’m trying to showcase in my artwork is the stress and difficulty of online learning. With the pandemic going around, most schools are doing online learning with the choice of doing face to face learning. Most student’s parents aren't allowing their kid(s) to go back in person, so the student(s) has to adapt to a new learning environment. Adapting to a new learning environment can be dicult and challenging when both the student and the administration don't know anything about technology or don't have the resources for/to help.

Apologetics
Sheridan, Grade 12

Ryan High School

Artist Statement
My artwork was ininfluenced by the triptych art of the Renaissance. My artwork is conveying the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. The word "apologetics" means to defend one's faith, which is what I am doing with this artwork. The right image is of someone who does not know Jesus and is bound by sin. The middle is a pastor preaching. The left is the girl in a relationship with Jesus.

The Gender of Things
Cheryl, Grade 9
color pencil
12 x 24
Ryan High School
Brian Pierce, teacher
Artist Statement
The purpose of my artwork was to show an image of people who went against the gender norms associated with them, such as the woman having a mustache and the man having long hair. I added the hammer to really tie into the effect of something being broken, which is further emphasized with the broken glass shards splayed on the table.

I made this painting as a way to express myself. It’s hard for me to sometimes be Lugo in hby the when I am I feel as if I’m free. The parrot with open wings represents my spirit animal. It’s the animal I feel most relatable with.

Alone
Ashley, Grade 9
pencil
12 x 18
Ryan High School
Brian Pierce, teacher
The purpose or message of my artwork is that even if you have friends around, you can feel lonely. Either you're being left out or they don't notice you. I've heard people saying that they feel lonely and that they're being left out. So that gave me an idea to draw what that feeling looks like.

For me looking at nature brings me peace and comfort. I really enjoy just looking at them all around the gardens. Also I feel like by looking at they usually bring someone's mood up. For example when receiving flowers the person really likes it and by the end they are usually happy.
