“ut sit pater” – what is a father?

In this image, I’m keeping the scene simple and basic. The chalk board, handwritten question in chalk, and the solitary chrysanthemum. What is a father? What are men taught about becoming a father? We get to one of the deep levels of what defines masculinity in society, fatherhood. In my life, growing up, “playing with dolls” has been shunned… a boy is pushed instead to play with “action figures”, extreme examples of being a soldier, a warrior. You don’t see figures about being a scientist, an explorer, you especially do not see anything that pushes the expression of any nurturing behavior that is needed to be a father. I’m asking, what do I need to know to be a good father? All I’ve gotten back is silence. I’ve had to learn from my mistakes and look to my father who had poor examples as well, and learn from his mistakes as well.
