My name is Sofia Hays. I am an artist, a wife and a mother. I have been drawing since I was three and creating figurines since I was 13. I have lived in Denton for most of my adult life. Found my husband here and have raised my three boys here. I live in a rural part of Denton so I’m always surrounded by nature. I love small nature; so a lot of my art showcases this love, making small things huge and beautiful. I love using big and bright colors, crystals, glitter, and 3D-ing wall pieces to make them pop out at viewers. My hope is that when people see my art pieces they can see that even the smallest or sometimes scariest things in nature can bring beauty and joy into their lives.

The afterlife of trees
A golden triangle woodturners Exhibit
June 2 - August 19, 2023
Meadows Gallery
The Afterlife of Trees showcases artwork made from the wood of various types of trees. The Golden Triangle Woodturners, a local woodturning club, turn the wood by using a lathe tool that spins the wood while the turners shape the wood using sharp knives and blades. Using various techniques, skills, and materials, the woodturners have continued the life of the tree beyond its removal. The exhibition explores how trees can continue providing beauty and function after removal. Woodturners have created both functional pieces like vases and bowls to decorative pieces. Also featured in this exhibition are tools the woodturners use to create their artwork, including the lathe and turning tools.
Pieces on display are from a variety of trees, Including Maple, Ash, Cherry, Sycamore, Myrtle, Macacauba, Mesquite, Elder, Elm, Padauk, Yellow Heart, Walnut, Bradford Pear, and many other types of trees, all listed on their labels. Several pieces are turned from the Bradford Pear trees from the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center’s parking lot that were removed due to safety concerns after 30 years of growth and shade. Pieces from those wood have been indicated on their labels.
We hope this exhibition showcases both the local talent of our woodturners and the continuation of the beauty of trees as they serve new purposes in their afterlife.

Artist Statement
Before I was even aware of my ancestry being Nga Puhi and Scottish, they influenced my thoughts, beliefs and my art. Land and music directly affect me which is evident in most of my work. Indigenous people naturally tend to have a spirituality based upon land and music so I can safely assume this is where my connection has stemmed from.
I always strive to take my work into new directions, continually learning new skills and never being afraid to try something different. Evolving outside of New Zealand's accepted art scene has also been a contributing factor to my style, which also drove me to look outside of New Zealand for inspiration.
I made the decision to leave New Zealand in Dec 2019 in order to advance my art and build a business. My art spans many mediums. I am comfortable with oil, watercolour, pencil, and airbrush as well as carving beautiful bone and stone sculptures. My work ranges from tiny miniatures to huge murals, from colorful abstracts to photo-real portraits, many of which embrace my Mäori whakapapa (heritage) and wairua (spirituality).

Biennial Artists’ Books Competition and Exhibition
Presented by the University of North Texas Libraries
January 21- March 26, 2022
Reception: January 21, 2022
Festival Hall
From UNT Libraries website:
“Since 1999, UNT Libraries in cooperation with UNT Friends of the Libraries has offered a biennial artists’ book competition, inviting UNT students, faculty, and community members to submit entries for inclusion in the exhibit. All accepted student entries are eligible for a purchase prize that is granted at the discretion of the judges. Entries selected for the purchase prize become a permanent addition to Special Collections. Inspiration for the competition came from Gilbert Peña’s 1:31 a.m., an artists’ book acquired by UNT in the mid-1990s.
The purpose of the competition and exhibition is to encourage developing student’s work in the medium of Artists’ Books, to foster the creation of Artists’ Books, reward excellence and creativity in the medium of Artists’ Books, and to build the collection of Artists’ Books in UNT Special Collections.
An artist’s book is a medium in which to convey artistic expression using the form and function of a book as the point of inspiration - a book that is a work of art in itself. Often created to be art that is portable and interactive, many artists’ books call into question the formal role of a book and become sculptural objects. Artist’s books can defy description and categorization. They are more than just text; they become art through combinations of text and images, fine or unusual bindings, or unexpected formats that engage the viewer. Often, artists’ books are unique items or of limited editions. A good artists’ book will truly be more than words on a page, and pages within covers.”

Works by Cheyann Schott
September 3 - December 4, 2021 in Festival Hall
Abstract artist working primarily with acrylic that uses paint to its fullest extent by focusing on color and exploring different narratives through fashion, still life, and landscapes.
Artist Bio
Cheyann Schott is an independent artist living in Texas, who has been painting and creating from a very young age. With only a few art classes throughout high school and college, she owes her start to her favorite artist, her grandmother, who put the first paint brush in her hand and has supported her dream from the very beginning. Inspired by many things, Cheyann got her bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising from the University of North Texas, which has opened new avenues in her art career to include fashion inspired pieces, as well as her abstract pieces. Even at times when life got in the way of art, the pull to a creative life was always too great. Like Vincent Van Gogh once said, “The only time I feel alive is when I’m painting.” Loving every minute of her artistic journey, Cheyann is consistently motivated and eager to continuing

Flourish
A collaboration exhibit by Courtney DiMare & Brianna Shimer
September 3 - December 4, 2021 in Gough Gallery
Flourish presents ceramics and metal work that shows the results of prolific and practiced making. It questions traditional processes and material function within contemporary craft. Two University of North Texas, Master of Fine Art candidates, Courtney DiMare and Brianna Shimer will present their individual research along with collaborative installations. Flourish highlights the journey of growth through the artistic process. DiMare and Shimer’s work dialogs by asking the viewer: how does material transform? And what does that transformation say about the evolution of process and product? Both artists are crafting a user-art relationship experience. Their work is interested in the ceremony of interacting with objects. Flourish is a bold extravagant gesture that celebrates emerging artists.

Discover Denton Welcome Center, Access Art Alley
March 5, 2020 - March 2021
Artist Statement:
My name is Jay “Liam” McKey, I am a 51-year-old, lifelong artist who is finally gathering the courage needed to display my art in a more public fashion. I have been a graphic designer, corporate trainer, illustrator, photographer and videographer for over 25 years. I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and operate on the spectrum, hence “everything” related to art is of interest to me including landscapes, how food looks, fashion and naturally occurring patterns in my everyday life. I have not painted in 20+ years and only recently, in the past 4 months started again and have amassed over 100 paintings of various subject matter. All parts of life are art to me hence all subject matter is open for artistic interpretation as representative by my exhibit here. I hope to help encourage others to chase their dreams, live their passions, stay on fire, live with desire and keep reaching higher.
Artist Biography:
Jay “Liam” McKey is an UNT alumni that currently works as a corporate trainer and graphic designer. He owns McKey Studio that specialized in painting, graphic design, small business marketing, consulting, photography, illustrations, and videography. He is also the band manager for his daughters’ (Maegan, Rose, and Mia) band, Platos Theory. Jay loves that Denton is a place full of family activities, art, music and that the town continues to retain that small-town feel. He and his wife of 25 years, Irene, are former owners of a martial arts studio and Jay is a Texas Amateur Organization of Karate State Champion.

INTRAPLAY
January 16 - February 20, 2021
Festival Hall
Multi-disciplinary works in thread, ceramic, and metal by UNT art students: Lara Asam, Jihye Han, Naomi Peterson, and Kyung Hee Im. INTRAPLAY brings together four artists creating experiential metaphors based on personal perspective. Processes and material range from ceramic, fiber, metal, wood, and CAD (computer-aided design). Collectively, the artists reflect understandings of spatial, social, and temporal relationships through material and process. The goal of this exhibition is to describe the personal in relation to the universal in order to connect individual stories within a larger narrative. During these uncertain times, it’s easy to forget that we are part of a community; people need other people. The intraplay between both internal and external are what define us. By constructing physical objects that interpret individual intangible experiences, the artists translate what it means to be human.

More Time
Annette Lawrence
Gough Gallery, Patterson-Appleton Arts Center
October 4 - December 15, 2019
Annette Lawrence’s studio practice is characterized by transforming raw data into drawings, objects, and installations. The data accounts for and measures everyday life. Her subjects of inquiry range from body cycles, to ancestor portraits, music lessons, unsolicited mail, and journal keeping. She addresses questions of text as image, and the relationship between text and code. Her work is grounded in examining what counts, how it is counted, and who is counting. Her process is one of making and unmaking, looking, waiting, recognizing things that go unannounced and remain steady, continuous, and unremarkable on the surface, but hold magic over time.

SAM IVIE AND JONATHAN REYNOLDS
Festival Hall, Patterson-Appleton Arts Center
January 11 - March 23, 2019
This exhibit features the photography of Jonathan Reynolds and the paintings and drawings of Sam Ivie. This collaboration featuring Reynolds’ photographs along with Ivie’s images is the result of a plan to engage in more artist-organized two-person and group exhibits. Painted or drawn portraits have a unique way of functioning with landscape photography. Displayed alongside each other, the mediums of color photography and painting form a dynamic exhibit because of their differences. Both artists use photography, with the main variant being one’s work is photography and the other’s use of the medium is a means to an end. For Ivie, it is reference material he uses along with imagery he primarily invents; for Reynolds, it is the medium itself.

February 3 - May 19, 2018
Known for his narrative paintings, Robert Jessup has eschewed a representational style in his recent work in order to create ambitious paintings and drawings that aim to reconfigure his world of imagery. Barely decipherable figures navigate a wild and colorful pictorial space that churns with a furious plasticity. the very visceral paint application can range from the most delicate whisperings of a fine brush's touch, to the brutal scrapings and trowelings of the widest knife. Jessup states: "the configurations arise from the battle between the charged forces of the rectangle, the impetuosity of my flailing physical self, and the persistence of my desire to configure in spite of my many doubts and dissatisfactions."

In his series Forged Utopia, Valderas creates public installations of piñata-like billboards that mimic real estate signage, but with phrases of common Spanish slang that, when placed in context, cryptically comment on the changing landscape they inhabit.
